JAQ, New York
JAQ is proposing a footprint that is stepped back from and rotated out of axis with the adjacent streets. This configuration opens up a “new yard” atop the Arch Street Rail Yards – a pedestrian corridor connecting Jackson Avenue and 21st Street that provides ample opportunities for new and attractive open space.
The building footprint resists an anonymous bar building in favor of an aggregate of slightly shifted volumes, much like train cars in a rail yard, in plan. Similarly the massing includes a shift - a slight but nevertheless unexpected change in direction halfway to the top of the building.
